Frequently Asked Questions

For Parents

and Guardians

What is this initiative?

We are health professions students (medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dental, PA, etc.) and graduate students who want to help any families in the Houston area whose children are transitioning to online curriculum and may need some help adjusting.

Who is organizing?

We are a group of students from the Baylor College of Medicine, University of Texas School of Dentistry, and University of Texas School of Public Health looking for ways to help our community. However, this project is in NO WAY AFFILIATED with any of these scholastic institutions.

Who are the tutors?

Currently they are students of the aforementioned professional health care learning Institutions. Please note that we are NOT certified educators and that we will do our best to prepare for the tutoring session.

Where is this happening?

Our volunteers will be conducting web-based video tutoring sessions via a platform that is convenient for both you and the student (ex. Zoom, Google Hangouts, Skype, etc.).

What ages do you tutor? What kind of subjects/grade levels can the students provide?

Currently, we are offering tutoring for K-12 students in most standard topics. There is also an option to request any specific subjects if there are not already listed on the online form. If you would like to clarify if your child fits into this category, please don't hesitate to reach out to our coordinators at requests@htxcovidsitters.org.

How much does this cost?

Payment is not required, as we wanted to make this a free service for everyone in need. Our students are made aware that this is a voluntary service on their behalf.

How long can I receive tutoring?

Currently, we ask that you evaluate your child’s tutoring needs weekly. Additionally, while our respective schools are currently holding online classes, we are still expected to attend and complete class sessions, including online small group sessions. Also, please remember that we are not professional educators. If you find yourself needing them for more hours than our students can manage, please reach the Coordination Team at requests@htxcovidsitters.org so we can reevaluate.

For Volunteers

What is this initiative?

We are health professions (medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dental, PA, etc.), graduate and undergraduate students who want to help any families in the Houston area whose children are transitioning to online curriculum and may need some help adjusting.

Who is organizing?

We are a group of students from the Baylor College of Medicine, University of Texas School of Dentistry, and University of Texas School of Public Health looking for ways to help our community. However, this project is in NO WAY AFFILIATED with any of these scholastic institutions.

Will I be monetarily compensated for my time?

No, this program is voluntary and compensation is not to be expected, as we want to help any families in need during this difficult time.

What will the pairings look like?

After you and families fill out the intake form, we will work to create 2-3 student pods based on matching what subjects/grades are needed and what you feel comfortable teaching. There will be one pod per family and you will schedule the tutoring sessions on a web-based video platform that is conducive to you (ex. Zoom, Google Hangouts, Skype, etc.). It will be the responsibility of the family to let the students know their time requirements and the students to coordinate to best cover the requested shifts.

How do I prepare for tutoring sessions for various grade levels and subjects?

After the initial contact between your pod and the family is made, please ensure that the parents, guardians, or students send you specific topics and/or worksheets that their child needs help with. For various age groups, here is some advice:

K-3rd grade: Let them lead you! Whatever they’re interested in will be educational for them if you’re the tutor-sitter, take the same interest/enthusiasm and they’ll get where they need to go! Listen to how they explain and then explain back in the terms they use.

4-5th grade: Rely mostly on parents for direction of what they’re learning/assignments but also  take into consideration what the student is interested in.

6-12th grade: Rely on their assignments/teacher objectives to guide you in your tutoring. So if they can’t give you any direction, ask more questions!! Ex: what don’t you understand?, what did your teacher say that confused you? Why don’t you like this subject?/why do you like this subject?

Is there any material I can refer to?

It is important to remember that we are not licensed educators but are hoping to help fill any gaps the children have from transitioning to online curriculum. We’d strongly recommend that you obtain the child’s teacher’s assignments to work through with them rather than coming up with any separate curriculum. If the child would like some extra practice, here is a resource that could be helpful:

What if I get paired with a family and their requests are outside of my comfort zone or the hours are too much for me to handle at this moment?

We have intentionally placed you in pods of 2-3 students to serve 1 family in order to minimize the burden on each student. However, if you are facing difficulties or requests that are beyond your scope, please reach out to the student coordinators at volunteers@htxcovidsitters.org and we will work with you and the family to either come up with a plan that works for everyone. We value your health and well-being at the utmost.

What is the time commitment needed?

Any time you are able to contribute is incredibly appreciated. There is no minimum or maximum time limits for volunteering. Our families will surely appreciate any and all help that you can provide them. With this being said, please remember to take care of yourself during this time!
